Expert travel tips: Lima

What the guidebook doesn’t tell you…

  • There’s only one taxi you should take from Lima’s airport – Taxi Green – look for their booth when you leave Arrivals. There are no other taxis allowed in the airport, so refuse any other service offered within the airport. They offer an excellent and safe service and are also bookable online (www.taxigreen.com.pe).
  • Attention women who have been travelling a while in South America and are in urgent need of some retail therapy! There is a Zara and a Mango in the Saga Fallabella department store in Miraflores.

Sleeping

HQ Villa Hostel, Independencia 1288, Miraflores (hqvilla.com)
This hostel was brilliant. Yes the bedding is cheap and scrappy and the showers are crap, but there’s such a safe and homely feel to the place, you soon forget any complaints.
What I paid: S/.35 (£8/US$13) for a bed in a six-bed dorm with en suite bathroom.
Showers: Electric; awful. Erratic water temperatures and pressure, and I got two electric shocks – don’t put your hands anywhere near the showerhead!
Internet: WiFi; three PCs.
Other amenities: large lounge areas and TV room with many films; extra large kitchen; garden; BBQ.
