Expert travel tips: Puno

What the guidebook doesn’t tell you…

  • There’s a big Plaza Vea supermarket on Jiron Los Incas near the train station, where you can get ingredients for cheap meals. Particularly useful is the ready-made food counter and the bakery at the back of the store. Upstairs there’s a food court with budget eateries. One café even offers a self-service buffet priced by weight (a good way to watch the pounds!). There’s a cinema here if you fancy a film, too.
  • Take just a short stroll a couple of blocks down from the main tourist drag of Jiron Indepedencia to find restaurants with much better quality food as well as more sensible prices.

Sadly I have since heard has closed down. There’s still an excellent branch I popped my head into in Cusco, though.
